Director Robert J. Scarrillo commended Detective Stanley Fitzgerald for courageously arresting an armed suspect while working alone on surveillance. The suspect carried a .38-caliber revolver; three vials of cocaine were subsequently recovered.

A COMMENDATION IS IN ORDER FOR DETECTIVE STANLEY FITZGERALD WHO, SINGLE HANDEDLY ARRESTED A GUN TOTING SUSPECT. WHILE ALONE AND ON SURVEILLANCE DETECTIVE FITZGERALD OBSERVED A MAN STEALTHILY ADVANCE INTO AN ALLEY NEXT TO A HOUSE WITH A 38 CAL REVOLVER IN HIS HAND. WITHOUT HESITATION, AND WITH NO TIME TO CALL FOR BACK-UP, THE DETECTIVE ENTERED THE ALLEYWAY. WHILE IDENTIFYING HIMSELF AS A POLICE OFFICER, WITH BADGE AND GUN DRAWN, HE ORDERED THE SUSPECT TO DROP HIS WEAPON. AFTER A BRIEF BUT APPREHENSIVE PAUSE THE SUSPECT COMPLIED. DETECTIVE FITZGERALD PLACED HIM UNDER ARREST AND TRANSPORTED HIM AND THE GUN TO THE BUREAU OF NARCOTICS. A SEARCH AT QUARTERS REVEALED THAT THE SUSPECT ALSO WAS IN POSSESSION OF THREE VIALS OF COCAINE. DETECTIVE FITZGERALD IS COMMENDED FOR HIS COURAGEOUS, SWIFT, AND DECISIVE ACTION.
